Department Requirements

Candidates for the Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering must select their general education courses in the humanities and the arts, social sciences, and interdisciplinary studies to satisfy both university and the accreditation agency (Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) requirements. These requirements are described under Special General Education Requirements for Mechanical Engineering Major in the College of Engineering and Engineering Technology section of the catalog. Although transfer students with the A.A. or A.S. degree may already have completed the university's general education requirements as discussed in "Admissions" in the catalog, their course work must include 18 hours of general education course work which fulfills ABET requirements.

Meeting ABET requirements means selecting the 18 hours of general education course work to include one sequence in the humanities and arts and one sequence in the social sciences. A sequence is defined as a minimum of 6 hours of course work chosen from the same department; however, related course work from two different departments or disciplines may also be selected to form a sequence. The two sequences cannot be chosen from the same department. The courses chosen for the two sequences, along with the remaining hours, must be selected from the courses listed in the general education requirements. Transfer courses selected from the NIU Articulation Handbook for Illinois Community Colleges must articulate as courses listed in the general education requirements or as humanities or social science electives. Approved sequences in the humanities and arts and the social sciences are listed below. Students are required to consult with their faculty advisers for approval of all course and sequence selections not shown below to insure fulfillment of the university general education and ABET requirements. Students must also consult their respective faculty advisors to determine appropriate courses.

All mechanical engineering students must have their schedule reviewed, approved and signed by their faculty advisor each semester. Any deviation from an approved course schedule may delay graduation.

Information for transfer students

Transfer applicants must submit the following:

A current application for admission
An official high school transcript and ACT or SAT score report (NOTE: Applicants with 24 or more completed semester hours of transferable credit are not required to submit a high school transcript.);
An official transcript from each college attended (sent by each college to the Office of Admissions).
Enrollment into courses offered at NIU which fulfill NIU's core competency requirement in mathematics requires an entry-skill level, determined through placement testing and/or explicit prerequisite, at least equal to that expected from the successful completion of an intermediate algebra course. Because intermediate algebra is not offered at NIU, you will be expected to have attained this skill level prior to enrollment into NIU core competency mathematics courses.;

Applicants who have attempted up to and including 12 semester hours of credit will be evaluated as freshmen for admission purposes and must meet the current freshman admission requirements. The grade point average earned for the attempted 12 hours or less will not affect the admission decision. (This policy has been developed to encourage students to take advantage of local post-secondary educational opportunities, either during their senior year in high school or during the summer before NIU enrollment, without jeopardizing their admission to Northern.)

Applicants who have attempted more than 12 semester hours but who have earned fewer than 24 semester hours of transferable college-level credit at the time of application must:;

1.; Meet current freshman admission criteria.;
2.; Be in good standing at the last college attended.;
3.; Have a GPA of at least a C (2.00 on a 4.00 scale) from all colleges attended (as computed by NIU standards).;

Applicants who have earned between 24 and 59 semester hours of transferable college-level credit at the time of application must:;

1.; Have at least a C grade point average (2.00 on a 4.00 scale) from all colleges attended (as computed by NIU standards).;
2.; Be in good standing at the last college attended.;
3.; Satisfy Northern's competitive transfer grade point average.
