Welcome to NIU ME web site!!!
The Department of Mechanical Engineering of Northern Illinois University
provides both a great Bachelor and a Master of Science degree programs. The
university provides student-friendly environment, affordable education and
well-balanced campus life. The city of DeKalb
is conveniently located at the outskirts of the Chicago
metropolitan area, one of the most dynamic and thriving areas for cultural,
technological, manufacturing, financial, and touring activities in the United States.
The internationally renowned Argonne National Laboratory and Fermi National
Laboratory are within one hour driving distance from NIU campus. DeKalb is
also close to Rockford, the second largest
city in Illinois
and home of many manufacturing companies. Under the blessings of the state,
the Department moved into the newly completed Engineering Building
in 1995.
Our students enjoy a well-balanced campus
life, excellent curricula, dedicated faculty, comprehensive student
advising, abundant opportunities of co-ops and internships, and modern
facilities. Hence, it is not a surprise that many students chose NIU-ME
over other ME programs in the state, which contributed to our significant
growth in recent years. Our undergraduate program has grown to almost 400
students, the second largest ME undergraduate program in the state, and the
M.S. graduate program has about 50 graduate students. Our alumni are highly
regarded by local and national industry and our graduates enjoy high
employment rate with starting salaries in the national norm. Our top
undergraduates receive graduate scholarships from the top institutions in
the nation. This is a remarkable achievement considering that the
department and the college were established in 1985!
The college commits to excellent education
and invests heavily in laboratory equipment, computers, smart classrooms
and students’ professional activities. The department is equipped with most
computer software including Pro/Engineer, Unigraphics, ANSYS, Fluent,
PolyFLOW, FE-Fatigue, Working Model, MatLAB, MathCAD and AutoCAD. The
department supports many student professional organizations including
American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), Society of Automotive
Engineers (SAE), and American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and
Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE).
The department encourages student participation in Mini Baja Racing
Car Projects, Formula Car Projects, and Robotics Club Projects and Airplane
Design Projects. Our seniors and graduate students often work on projects
sponsored by local industries. Many of our graduate students receive job
offer before they receive their degrees.
NIU has more than a 100-year history and has
nurtured a student-friendly environment. DeKalb is a friendly, growing town
close to hundreds of ME related companies in the Chicago
and Rockford
areas. I hope that you enjoy our web site and consider us in your plan of
education.
