The advising per see is required but you are free to make any decision you like. We will try our best to help and guide you towards your graduation. We will tell you what we think is the best for you. However, the final decision and responsibility is yours: after all it is your time, your money, and your freedom. After being advised of what we think is the best way for you to graduate, you may freely make your decision by registering any course you have prerequisite for, dropping and/or adding courses later etc.

In order to graduate you need to satisfy all graduation requirements from the catalog of your choice during your stay at NIU (bring the catalog for advising). You may change the catalog year at any time and satisfy its requirements, but you can not mix and match different catalogs.
