1. PURPOSE
Provide engineering and engineering technology students with an opportunity to-
Practice their visual, written, and oral communication skills in a conference environment
Share their work with students and faculty from other colleges and universities
Improve the visibility of student efforts,
Recognize excellence in student projects, and
Foster the sharing of ideas about team-based projects and undergraduate research amongst ASEE members.
2. ELIGIBILITY AND RECOGNITION
2.1 Design Teams
Undergraduate student teams from any engineering program in the Illinois-Indiana section are invited to present a poster on a team-based design project completed as part of a course. Team size must be two or more students, and at least two team members are required to attend this Conference. Each team is required to have a faculty advisor. The faculty advisor must be a registered attendee of the conference and may advice up to four teams. Each student participant will be provided with a complimentary lunch (Saturday Only) and will receive a Certificate of Participation. During the Saturday awards dinner, awards and certificates will be presented to teams in four categories.
Student teams may register in any one of the following categories:
First and Second Year Engineering and Engineering Technology Design Teams
Junior/Senior Engineering and Engineering Technology Design Teams (teams of students within the same discipline)
Cross Disciplinary Engineering Design Teams (teams of students from different engineering disciplines)
Cross Academic Levels Engineering and Engineering Technology Design Teams (teams of students that bridge the first/second year and junior/senior year academic levels)
Publicity will be sought for winning teams.
2.2 Undergraduate Researchers:
Individual undergraduate students working on undergraduate research projects from any engineering program in the Illinois-Indiana section are invited to present a poster. Each student is required to have a faculty advisor. The faculty advisor must be a registered attendee of the conference and may advise up to four individuals. Each student participant will be provided with a complimentary lunch and dinner and will be receive a Certificate of Participation. During the Saturday awards dinner, awards and certificates will be presented to individuals in four categories. Publicity will be sought for winning posters.
3. APPLICATION PROCEDURES
To apply, each student team must submit the following materials to the ASEE Illinois-Indiana Section Student Poster Competition Chair by February 4th, 2005.
A student team registration form.
A one-page maximum abstract. The attached abstract template must be used.
All students are highly encouraged to have their abstracts reviewed by their faculty advisor before submitting them for review. Two sample abstracts (sample1 and sample2) are available for reference. Students should be aware that their abstracts will be published in the conference proceedings. Therefore, they should be submitting professional quality work.
The Application Form and Abstract must be submitted by e-mail to the Student Poster Session Chair. All subsequent contact should be made through email only.
4. ABSTRACTS
Design Teams:
The content of the abstract should:
Clearly state the purpose and significance of the design project
Describe the team structure including the team member selection process and the roles played by each team member. Your team may wish to consult with your faculty advisor on this issue.
Summarize the design with emphasis on engineering concepts
Summarize the most important results
Undergraduate Researchers:
The content of the abstract should:
Clearly state the purpose and significance of the research project
Summarize the research project with emphasis on engineering concepts
Summarize the most important results
5. POSTER DIMENSIONS
The posters provided are 36" high x 48" wide when fully opened (center panel is 24" wide with a side panel of 12" on either side of the center panel). Posters will be set on a table. They are made of corrugated cardboard and they stand on their own when opened. Participants can use tape, glue, or push pins to attach things to the posters.
If you provide your own poster board, it must sit on the table provided.
You are responsible for providing your own PC, laptop, and projector, if desired. Electrical power will be supplied upon request. While you may use demonstration props and computers, you should not rely on them to explain things not covered by your poster. They will not be considered in the judging criteria.
6. JUDGING PROCEDURES & CRITERIA
Each abstract and poster presentation will be evaluated based on the following criteria:
6.1 ABSTRACT (both the first and final submission)
Problem (purpose and significance) is clearly stated
Team structure is clearly explained (Design Teams Only)
Project is clearly explained and has engineering emphasis
Important results are clearly explained
Abstract is organized
6.2 POSTER
Engineering Content
o Emphasis on the use of engineering to solve the problem
o Poster focuses on a well-defined engineering problem
o Overall engineering problem and solution approach can be grasped quickly and easily
Organization
o There is a clear and concise statement of the problem
o One short paragraph or list for each subheading
o Organization is logical with a clear flow of ideas from one heading to the next
o Use of color and design attract attention to major ideas
Text
o Text is an appropriate size for viewing from a comfortable distance
o Sufficient content is given to understand the importance of the problem
o Methods, results, and conclusions are easily understood in a reasonable amount of time
o Details are adequate to convey the main idea
o Correct use of grammar
Visuals
o Adequate visuals are included to communicate the subject
o No unnecessary visuals are included to complicate interpretation of crucial ideas
o Visuals are attractive and of high quality
